arrangement of caring and delivery of child by a woman for another couple or
person is called surrogacy. The woman who carries and gives a birth is called
‘surrogate mother’. The couple, for whom the surrogate mother gives birth, is called the ‘intended parents’.

surrogacy is also one of the markets that can provide a good compensation to
the women. The companies such as Surrogate Mothers Inc., Circle Surrogacy,
Surrogacy UK etc. provides surrogacy services to the people. These companies search both intended
parents and surrogate mothers.
Surrogacy in India : There is a $ 2.5 billion of surrogacy industry in India.
Each year, an estimated 25,000 foreign couples visit India for surrogacy services, resulting in more than 2,000 births. The
intended parents pay around $18,000 to $30,000, for the surrogacy services. The combination of excellent medical
facilities and lower cost attracts couples from all over the world to India .
Required Arrangements in
- Legal Reform: The government should enact the law of commercial surrogacy. It should clear the legal issues of intended parents are the legal parents for the child.
- Health Regulation: The government should regulate health services related to fertilization, delivery of the baby, medical procedures and over all standards of the hospitals or health clinics which will provide surrogate services.
- Public Awareness: The public awareness is necessary so that surrogate mothers will not be discriminated in the society.
Benefits: A woman can
earn about $ 10,000 (Rs.8,60,000) for giving birth to those who need a baby. It can increase
the livelihood of the people who are interested to provide the surrogate services.
The “intended parents” or the couples who are not able to have a child
themselves would get a child. This would create happiness in their family. The
intended mother’s dream of becoming mother could be fulfilled. This trade makes
everyone better-off. Why not to legalize and adopt this business in Nepal as well?
